The Online Brine Portal is designed by NTUA in the Framework of ZERO BRINE project aiming to offer access to relevant stakeholders on specific information in the domain of saline waste water management. The main objective is to bring together content from various sources in a single web page and to facilitate the use of the Online Brine Platform.

Moreover, within the portal, users will have the possibility to communicate in a forum. A search engine will be integrated to the portal (and the platform). Browsing to the portal will be free but full access (to the platform and the portal) will remain limited unless for the registered users.

The portal enables consultation and consensus building with the relevant stakeholders, facilitating the exchange of information and data produced by ZERO BRINE project.

Coordinated by TU Delft, ZERO BRINE project– ‘Re-designing the value and supply chain of water and minerals: A circular economy approach for the recovery of resources from saline impaired effluent generated by process industries’ advances circular economy business model solutions to reduce industrial saline wastewater streams by recovering and reusing the minerals and water from the brine in other industries, thus ‘closing the loop’ and improving the environmental impacts of production. ZERO BRINE is a 4-year Innovation Action (IA) financed by the European Commission that provides massive potential to replicate and deploy circular economy solutions in the field of industrial wastewater treatment.

ZERO BRINE includes 22 partners from research institutes, SMEs, construction companies, and end-users from 10 countries. ZERO BRINE integrates innovative technologies to recover water and minerals of sufficient purity and quality for good market value and is testing them at the demonstration project in the Netherlands, and 3 other pilot projects in Spain, Poland and Turkey.

The objective of ZERO BRINE project is to prove that minerals, such as magnesium, and clean water can be recuperated from industrial processes for reuse in other industries, thus facilitating the implementation of the Circular Economy package and the SPIRE Roadmap by developing the technological solutions and business models for wastewater/brine resource recovery.

In this context of circular economy, an active web service (OBP) is developed by NTUA in the framework of ZERO BRINE project. The OBP aims to promote the flow of secondary raw materials, by linking the Brine Owners with the Mineral/Water Users and also with the technology providers. The OBP will play a key role in replicating the paradigms generated in the framework of the ZERO BRINE project. The service allows new entries to register according to their role, and let the users search information and establish links with relevant parties. Hence, a network of interested stakeholders will be created to facilitate the transition towards Circular Economy within the process industry.

The development of an Industrial Symbiosis platform for brine recovery will facilitate the application of a new, disruptive resource management concept of systemic eco-innovation proposed in ZERO BRINE project.
